Contrary to what you might have thought, it is quite easy to position yourself for a cheaper rate. You just need the right recommendations and the determination to implement what you’ll be taught to start enjoying a cheaper rate. Let’s look at a few proven ways to get better rates…
1. Do your best to always drive carefully. You’ll be making a wise decision to always avoid being behind the wheels if you take alcohol.
If you’re convicted for driving under the influence (DUI) you’ll NOT see cheap rates for a very long time. And don’t overlook little things like speeding tickets because they cost you far more than what you pay as fines. They eventually raise your rate. For your safety then and cheaper rates, never go against any traffic law despite how minor you think it is.
2. A multi-vehicle discount is a sure-fire and simple way to get lower rates. However, there are some cases where you’ll make more savings by insuring each car with different insurance carriers. You can ensure you are choosing the best in your case by doing extensive comparison shopping. But anyway, a multi-vehicle discount is one way to get more affordable rates.
3. A multi-policy discount is a proven way to bring down your overall insurance cost. All you have to do to become eligible for this is to get your vehicle insurance policy from the same company that is handling, for example, your homeowners insurance.
However, I must stress that you may not be saving as much as you could by switching. It is advised that you get and compare quotes. Thereafter, you’ll not be be taking chances as you choose which to do because you’re positive about which saves you more.
4. People who don’t make claims for above 3 years normally get a special discount for this. But take note that not all providers give this discount.
If your insurance carrier is one of those who don’t give this discount let them know without mincing words that you will move over to another provider. Take it or leave it, every insurance company likes having insureds who stay claims free for these number of years and you shouldn’t have any difficulty getting better rates with a number of other insurers.
Almost all insurance carriers will do everything possible to make sure they do NOT lose you and this should draw a compromise on their part.
5. If you have collision and/or comprehensive for an old car which is not a classic, then you are paying much more than would do you any good. The reason for this is that insurance carriers base the compensation they pay on what is called the Kelly Blue Book value of your car at any given point in time. This shows that without respect to how much you paid and the number of years you did, you will get NOT a dime if the book says the car is not worth anything when you file a claim.
Do the smart thing and drop both from your vehicle insurance policy. Doing this will save you much and not compromise you in any way.
6. Increase your deductible and you’ll enjoy cheaper rates. The best choice is the highest you can afford with ease.
I must remind you that expected to make this amount available if you ever file a claim. So make it very high but keep it within easy reach.
7. Take advantage of every opportunity to avoid driving your car since it will reduce your mileage and, by extension, your rate. This definitely makes sense if you reside in an urban area where you have access to modern mass transit networks.
Another good option for people who want to bring down their mileage is carpooling.
